Compassionate care for every stage of life
Life does not always come with a clear explanation for what you are feeling or what has changed. You may be seeking support for your child, adjusting to a new chapter, working through grief, or trying to understand why something that once felt manageable no longer does. You do not need to have everything figured out before you reach out.
At Intrinseq Counseling in Fredericksburg, VA, we provide a welcoming place for children, teens, couples, families, and individuals to explore those challenges with the support of experienced therapists. Every client brings a unique story, shaped by their relationships, experiences, strengths, and hopes for the future. Our role is to understand that story, offer practical support, and help clients build the skills and confidence they need to move forward with greater clarity and resilience.
“I founded Intrinseq Counseling because I believe therapy should begin with listening. I want to understand your story, what brings you in, and what you hope will be different. From there, we work together to find an approach that fits your needs and the season of life you are in.” - Kim, Founder
Our Approach to therapy
We believe that growth begins with trust, curiosity, and a strong therapeutic relationship. Before we focus on strategies or skills, we want you to know that you can speak openly, ask questions, and take your time.
Our approach is collaborative and flexible because therapy should not look the same for everyone. With children, we use creative and play-based approaches that allow them to express thoughts and feelings in ways that come naturally to them. With teens and adults, we create space to talk through what is happening, understand patterns, and develop practical ways to cope and move forward.
The Values That Shape Every Session
Every person deserves to feel welcomed, respected, and heard. We strive to create an environment where you can bring difficult feelings, uncertainty, or experiences that are hard to put into words, and we will make room for them without judgment.
Compassion
We approach every client with openness because no two experiences are exactly alike. We do not assume we know what your experience is like. We listen, ask questions, and take time to understand the person behind the concern that brought you to therapy.
Curiosity
Evidence-Based Care
We draw from research-supported approaches while considering your needs, personality, goals, and stage of life. Clinical knowledge matters, but so does knowing when an approach needs to be adapted.
Therapy is something we do together. We value your perspective and work with you to determine what feels useful, whether that includes learning new skills, understanding relationships, working through grief, or making sense of a transition.
Collaboration
Some seasons of life can leave you unsure of what comes next. Our role is not to tell you how your story should unfold, but to help you understand where you are, recognize your strengths, and find a way forward.
Hope
Care that begins with empathy and connection
Therapy can look very different depending on who is sitting across from us. A young child may communicate through imagination and play rather than conversation. A teenager may need a place where they can speak honestly without feeling pressured to have the answers. An adult may need support while adjusting to motherhood, a career change, a relationship, an empty nest, or a loss.
These differences matter. We do not want to fit you into a particular way of doing therapy but rather to understand how you communicate, what you need, and what will help you feel comfortable enough to do the work. We believe therapy should feel personal and approachable.
Meet our founder
Founder | Licensed Professional Counselor | Registered Play Therapist | Certified Grief Educator
kim anderson
Hi, I’m Kim Anderson. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor, Certified Grief Educator through David Kessler, Registered Play Therapist, and the owner of Intrinseq Counseling.
I have the privilege of hearing people’s stories every day. Some arrive knowing exactly what they want help with, while others know only that something has become difficult and they would like support. As a retired military spouse, I have a personal understanding of the transitions, adjustments, and changes that can come with military life and the unique ways those experiences can affect individuals and families. I do not expect you to have the right words when you walk through my door. We can start with what you know and work from there.
Much of my work centers on life transitions and adjustments, including starting a new school, graduating, going to college, becoming a parent, navigating relationships or marriage, becoming an empty nester, and experiencing grief or loss. I also work with children, teens, adults, couples, and families experiencing anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, trauma, grief, and other challenges.
With younger children, I use creative and play-based therapy because children often communicate through what they do before they can explain what they feel. Through this work, I help children develop self-awareness and begin to understand the connection between their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
Above all, I want my clients to feel safe, welcomed, and witnessed. Therapy is a place where you can be honest about what is happening without having to figure everything out on your own.
why clients choose intrinseq counseling
Choosing a therapist is personal. You want to know that the person you are trusting with your story will listen carefully and take the time to understand you. At Intrinseq Counseling, we do not begin with assumptions about what you need. We listen first and shape our approach around the person, family, or relationship in front of us. Our team brings specialized training and clinical experience while keeping the relationship at the center of the work.
Parents can receive guidance on how to support their children outside of therapy. Teens have space to develop their own voice and work through what they are experiencing. Individuals, couples, and families can slow down, talk openly, and work on the concerns that brought them in. From your first conversation with us, our goal is for you to feel respected and cared for. If you are considering therapy and are not sure where to begin, we would be glad to talk with you about what you need.
